Response 5 Therapy

“Response 5” is a very gentle, non-manipulative therapy that can help to improve your dog’s mobility health. Responses can help to relieve acute and chronic pain, speed recovery from injuries, and provide an improved quality of life.

Conditions that Responses can address are:

    • Joint stiffness
    • Strained muscles
    • Arthritis
    • Post-surgery recovery
    • Weak back end
    • Knee injuries
    • Long-standing issues
    • Sudden acute injuries
    • Spondylosis
    • Shoulder injury
    • Anxiety and Fear
Response 5 Therapy

During a session, your dog will lay down or stand comfortably and is never rushed or forced to participate.

Fingers and thumbs are applied to specific points on the dog’s body. A very gentle rolling move is made over soft tissue, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the connective tissue called fascia, that encourages the body’s natural ability to heal.

This move generates a stimulation or vibration, which given enough time, resonates until the tissue tension is reduced and relaxed. Tight muscle fibers loosen and separate allowing increased blood flow and lymphatic flow which is important for healing to take place.

There are periodic breaks between each series of moves as this gives the body time to realign itself before the next series of moves. You may notice your dog yawn, lick its paw, or pass gas. This indicates that the therapy is working.

When your dog has hind end weakness it appears in a number of ways such as rounded hips, atrophy in hind legs, or one leg is held back or turned outward.

In the first photo notice that the left leg and paw are turned out and the dog’s weight is being supported by the right side of the body. This indicates a weakness on the left side.

After three Response5 sessions notice, in the second photo, that a more normal balance has been restored.

After each session, allow your dog time to rest and heal. Make sure to give them extra water. No baths, brushing or hard play is recommended after sessions. The next day you can get back to normal. If you notice your dog is lethargic, a bit shaky or needing to be close to you, these are all signs that the therapy is working.

Many people report that they notice improved mobility, increased energy, newfound playfulness, and improved appetite.

A session normally takes 10-15 minutes, but your dog will determine the length of the session as many dogs will simply walk away when they have had enough.

Sessions are generally done one week apart to give the dog’s body time to process the changes from the previous session. Normally three sessions are needed and then a maintenance program can be considered to keep them at their best.

Response5 is based on Bowen Therapy which was originally used on humans and has been adapted to include animals with great success.

Response5 is not a substitute/replacement for normal veterinary care, but rather is complementary to it.

Each series of moves/steps supports a specific part of the body by releasing tension down the entire spine.

Hind end: musculoskeletal, digestive, urinary, and bowel, hip, knee, bladder, knee, ankle

Front end: elbows, jaw, neck, head, and respiratory

Mid-back: stabilizes the spine and all internal organs

About Avis

Here is what Abby, one of  the clients had to say: “We have a 15-year-old dachshund that suffers from Arthritis and low mobility. Kirby (pictured on the right) has had back issues in the past and struggles to get around now at his age with the stiffness in his front and back legs. Avis was kind enough to come and perform some movements on Kirby. They were very small movements, but they made a huge impact. Avis explained each movement to me when she performed them. After the first visit- the next day we noticed that Kirby seemed to move better with less stiffness and was able to use the back step easier than he had before. He also had a little more spring in his step. Overall the Response5 made a huge difference in his ability to move better and get up the steps with less of a struggle. He also had less of a hunch in his back caused by the stiffness and previous injuries.

Kirby loves when Avis comes to visit and was able to sit still for the Response5 procedure. We would highly recommend Avis as she is kind, gentle, compassionate, and her love for animals shows.”

Avis became interested in the Bowen Technique, also known as Bowenwork, when she had a chronic frozen shoulder, which had responded only minimally after several years of acupuncture, physical therapy, and massage. Her sister, who became a Bowenwork practitioner, convinced her to try a session. After just one Bowenwork session, she went from not being able to raise her arm above her waist without pain, to a full range of motion and no pain. And the improvement lasted! Astonished. That is when she decided to learn this remarkable therapy so she could deliver similar benefits to others.

Avis’ love of animals came from her parents at a very young age and has had many pets, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, and birds. She decided to learn Responses to help animals with improved mobility and improved quality of life. Avis has two adopted cats, Cleo, and Shadow.
